Australia is a long way from most of the world's data centers, so where your server sits matters more here than almost anywhere. If most of your visitors or players are in Australia and Oceania, a dedicated server hosted in Sydney keeps their response times short. It can also matter if your customers there expect their data to stay in the country.
Like every Hostripples dedicated server, the machine is yours alone, with full root access and an IPMI/KVM console for reinstalls and recovery. You pick the OS and control panel at checkout, and 24/7 support by live chat, email and ticket is included.
A few things are worth knowing before you choose a plan:
Taxes, where they apply, are added at checkout. Not sure which server suits your project? Talk to our team before you order.
Looking at other locations? See dedicated servers in Singapore and India, or SSD VPS in Sydney if a dedicated machine is more than you need.

The Sydney range is less uniform than the others, and that is useful if you read it carefully. Ports run from 3 Gbps to 5 Gbps, and storage is NVMe or, on Pro Storage, SAS hard drives. Here is the whole list in one place.
| Plan | CPU | RAM | Storage | Port | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro 1 (EPYC 4244P) | EPYC 4244P | 32 GB ECC | 2 x 960 GB NVMe | 3 Gbps | An application or store that wants a wide port |
| Pro 1 (EPYC 4245P) | EPYC 4245P | 32 GB DDR5 ECC | 2 x 960 GB NVMe | 3 Gbps | The same, with DDR5 memory |
| Pro 3 | EPYC 4465P | 64 GB DDR5 ECC | 2 x 960 GB NVMe | 3 Gbps | Databases and multi-service stacks |
| Pro Storage | EPYC 4345P | 32 GB DDR5 ECC | 2 x 24 TB SAS hard drives, up to 8 drives | 3 Gbps | Archives, backups and media you read in bulk |
| Enterprise I1 | Xeon Gold 6426Y | 128 GB ECC | Chosen at order: 2 x 1.92 TB to 6 x 7.68 TB NVMe | 5 Gbps | Large datasets with high throughput needs |
Most production applications land on Pro 1 or Pro 3. The two Pro 1 plans differ in processor model and memory type, so compare the live price before deciding. Pro 3 has twice the memory and is where we would put a serious database.
Not all Australian storage is NVMe, and we would rather say so up front. NVMe drives answer thousands of small requests at once, which is what databases, caches and busy websites want. SATA is older and slower. The SAS drives in Pro Storage are hard drives: large, spinning and built for capacity.
That honesty matters for the Pro Storage server, because 24 TB drives are attractive. It comes with two 24 TB SAS hard drives and can take up to eight, which is up to 192 TB of raw space before any RAID overhead. It is a good fit for a backup target, a video archive or a store of logs, where large files are written once and read in order. It is the wrong choice for a busy database, a mail server with millions of small files or anything that needs fast random access.
Port speed, memory, drive type and console access explained
The 300 and 500 Mbps entry ports suit game servers and modest sites. The 3 Gbps and 5 Gbps ports are for heavier delivery.
Essential Gaming and Standard Gaming 1 use high-clocked consumer chips, which game servers tend to like. Pro and Enterprise use server processors.
NVMe is fastest for small reads and writes. SATA and SAS hard drives trade speed for space and price.
Reinstall the OS, change boot settings or watch a restore from your desk, even if the server is not reachable over SSH.
Network-level protection is on every server, which is welcome for public game servers. Keep your software patched as well.
An unmanaged dedicated server in Australia is a clean slate, and the first thing to put on it is a backup plan. The rule of thumb is 3-2-1: three copies of your data, on two kinds of storage, with one copy off the server. RAID and snapshots are not backups, because both can faithfully copy a mistake.
The simplest reliable approach is a nightly rsync to a different machine, ideally in a different place. Pro Storage can be that destination for other servers, and you can also copy to a Storage VPS.
# dump the database first, so you copy a consistent file
mysqldump --single-transaction --all-databases | gzip > /backup/db-$(date +%F).sql.gz
# push to another machine, keeping dated hard-linked copies
rsync -a --delete --link-dest=/backups/latest -e ssh /srv/data/ backup@OTHER_HOST:/backups/$(date +%F)/
# see what differs between the source and the backup (dry run, nothing is copied)
rsync -a --dry-run --itemize-changes /srv/data/ backup@OTHER_HOST:/backups/latest/
Any backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan. Once a quarter, restore into a spare directory or a test machine, open the files, start the database from the dump and check that the data looks right. Time the restore, too. Pulling back 2 TB over a 500 Mbps port takes around nine hours in the best case, and the same data over 3 Gbps takes about an hour and a half, which is worth knowing before the day you need it.
Finally, use SSH keys, keep a firewall such as ufw, and agree on a patch window for kernel updates. The IPMI/KVM console is your safety net if a reboot does not come back cleanly. If you would rather someone else carried that load, see Managed Support.
Sydney is Australia's biggest city, and for audiences in Australia and New Zealand it is the obvious place for a server. Australia sits a long way from the rest of the world's major data center regions, so a server in the country makes a bigger difference to response time here than in most places. A CDN can serve static files near visitors, but the origin server still answers dynamic requests such as logins and carts.
Australian retailers see traffic peaks at the end of the financial year on 30 June, when sales run to clear stock, and again around Boxing Day. If you sell to Australians, run a load test before those dates, not after.
Sydney is UTC+10, or UTC+11 during daylight saving, which runs roughly from October to April. US Eastern time is UTC-5, or UTC-4 during US daylight saving. The two countries change their clocks on different dates, so Sydney is 14 to 16 hours ahead of New York depending on the time of year. A 2 a.m. Sunday maintenance window in Sydney in January is 10 a.m. on Saturday in New York. Support is available 24/7, but your own team's windows depend on that shifting gap, so write the times down in both zones.
The Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles cover how personal information is handled, including rules on disclosing it overseas, and the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme covers certain breaches. This is general information, not legal advice. Check with your own adviser, since hosting in Australia does not by itself make anyone compliant.
You have probably outgrown your current plan if you are being throttled, if you are paying for several small servers that could be one, or if the database needs more memory than you can rent. The move itself is a few careful steps.
VPS plans are cheaper, quicker to resize and plenty for many projects. See NVMe VPS in Sydney, Cloud VPS in Sydney or SSD VPS in Sydney. Shared hosting is the gentlest option for a small site and our guide to shared versus VPS hosting explains the trade-offs.
Dedicated hardware earns its place when you want hardware with no neighbors, a game server that needs a fast core and a stable port, a database with plenty of memory, or a large amount of local disk. You also take on the work of looking after it. If you are comparing locations, the same product is available in Singapore and India, and all ranges are on the dedicated servers overview.
What matters with a port is how much of it you actually use. Fully saturated, 300 Mbps carries about 3.2 TB a day and 500 Mbps about 5.4 TB. A 1 Gbps port, the speed of Standard Gaming 1, is roughly 10.8 TB a day. At 3 Gbps it is about 32.4 TB, and at 5 Gbps about 54 TB. Those are ceilings and nobody reaches them for a full day.
For a game server, the arithmetic is gentle. Even a generous 100 kbit/s per player puts 300 players at around 30 Mbps, so Essential Gaming's 300 Mbps port is fine. Where the small ports hurt is big transfers: pushing a new build, restoring a backup, or letting many people download at the same time. Add up the largest transfer you expect, divide by the port speed and see whether you can live with the answer. If you cannot, step up to a 1 Gbps or 3 Gbps plan rather than hoping.
